What Happens During a Reflex Arc?

Reflex responses are carried out at the level of the spinal cord withour assistance from the brain.  The impulse travels directly to the spinal cord from the attected body part, crosses over to a small interneuron, and then moves to a motor neuron that transmits it to a muscle.  The muscle contracts.  The brain becomes aware of the reflex only after it occurs.
